Retrieval is one mechanism. Persistence is the architecture.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation helps an AI find relevant information before it answers a question. It is genuinely useful, and Atlas uses retrieval where retrieval is the right tool.

But IIOS goes substantially further. It maintains state, relationships, evidence, history, judgment, and change over time. It can notice something important without waiting for someone to ask, and it preserves what the organization subsequently decides.
